Meet our Committee
With over 300 members, BCC is an ever-growing community. We have a committee responsible for the day-to-day running of the club, ensuring we uphold our Club Values and that the club continues to always create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members. Meet the 2024 Committee below.

Edwin Matthews
CLUB SECRETARY
After learning to ride a bicycle during lockdown in 2020, I very quickly got hooked and wanted to join a club. My closest club was Brixton and having grown up in the area there was no one else I wanted to ride with. I love representing the club and I am proud to be wearing the colours. It’s an important statement representing the community I’ve grown up in. I’ve met some amazing friends along the way and look forward to moving the club towards more local community involvement.

Lucy Russell-Bates
COMMUNICATION SECRETARY
I joined Brixton 2 years ago when I heard from a woman at my run club it was the best cycling club in London. I haven't tried the others, but I believe she was absolutely right. I could never go back to solo rides and struggling to get out in winter again. The community is incredible and the cycling is fantastic.
I've loved getting stuck in to making things for the club too and will be trying to bring some fun and excitement with the comms as well as the riding.

Jack Thomas
KIT & TRACK SECRETARY
I joined Brixton in 2019 after feeling left out of the fun the BCC lot were having without me at Herne Hill Velodrome. Brixton have always hit the sweet spot between riding seriously but also seeing the fun side of cycling; both during and after - be it racing or casual club runs.
My role as RR & track secretary largely involves organising our annual criterium champs, track events and ad hoc track bookings at Lee Valley.
-

Marta Cooper
TRACK SECRETARY
I joined the club in 2018 - I'd just started racing on the track at Herne Hill Velodrome and wanted to be part of a team, and Brixton ticked all the boxes for me! Since then I've had various committee roles (including Club Secretary from 2022-2024), taken up new disciplines such as cyclo-cross, and started coaching. As track secretary I help organise our annual track races and ensure the club maintains a strong relationship with our local Herne Hill Velodrome and wider cycling community.

Chris Humphrys
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
I got my current bike in the Cycle to Work scheme, a month before lockdown. It's never quite made it to work, but it got me out exploring and I joined Brixton post-pandemic as soon as I could get a spot on an Intro ride. I've not looked back since...I love having an amazing gang of people to ride with, and the chance to to try new things and discover new routes. I'll be doing my best to get as many new riders as possible out and about with us across 2025!
-

Carl Yaxley
SOCIAL SECRETARY
I was recommended Brixton Cycles Club by a friend (who's now part of BCC!) who'd heard Brixton was both sociable and had good cycling culture! I've been here for about a year riding mainly road rides and have had an absolute blast... all whilst meeting some great people. See you in the pub?
-

Robbie Kaiser
ROAD CAPTAIN
In lockdown, I followed what seems to a very common path into cycling, I was a frequently injured runner. Joined Brixton in 2021 to meet new people and try find more reasons to get out on my bike and the club has delivered those opportunities in spades. From a cycling perspective, I've managed to complete rides i would've never thought possible but more importantly made loads of course friends along the way, be that chatting to them in the lanes or in the pub afterwards.
As one of the road captains, I help with the Sunday club run as well as the annual road events we hold (TT, hill climb, etc...)

Zoë Lord
ROAD CAPTAIN & EVENTS SECRETARY
I’ve been a member of BCC for just over two years now and my only regret is that I didn’t join earlier! What I love about this club is that there's scope for everything here - serious racing and hard riding, gentle pootling round the lanes, audaxes, rides out to the coast, off-road, I could go on - all inevitably ending at a pub or taproom. The sense of community and friendships I've made are what makes me proud of being a part of this club. This is my first year as a Road Captain and you can find me most Sunday mornings at Cafe St Germain either for the club ride or to lead an intro ride. Pints afterwards are a given.
-

ED PHILLIPS
ROAD RACE SECRETARY
There are two great pleasures in life: eating cake and dishing out the hurt.
It was the former that led me to join Brixton Cycles and the latter that led me to join the committee as road race secretary.
If you too would like to dish out some hurt - or are perhaps tempted by what I guarantee will be the most exciting Wednesday night Of. Your. Life - then come don our club colours and join us on the starting line.
You won't regret it.

Charlie Hickman
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION OFFICER
I joined Brixton in 2021 after moving to London and picking up cycling whilst at uni. Brixton wasn't the closest club to where I lived but it certainly seemed the friendliest. I really love the variety of rides Brixton puts on whether it's the Sunday club run, Regents park laps, evening hills, long distance or off-road rides, there's a chance to get on the bike with Brixton most days of the week.
It's my first year in the committee as Diversity & Inclusion Officer I'm looking forward to working with Edwin to hold the committee accountable that we're upholding the club's values and doing everything we can to wear the colours with pride. -

Harriet Hayward
ROAD CAPTAIN
I joined BCC in 2024 looking for a fun, supportive cycling community in South London and I’m so glad i did.
As co-Road Captain, I hope to encourage riders to get stuck in to mid-week or weekend rides and experience the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome for riding or cheering duties.
You can usually find me on Sunday club runs, winter favourite ‘Paceline’ or surprising myself every time I make it up some of the steepest hills in SE London! -

Duncan Bryson
ROAD CAPTAIN
I joined Brixton in 2016. I've been riding a bike pretty seriously for 25 years, almost always on road, now mainly club runs and touring, but in my younger years I raced a bit. I'm out most Sunday mornings on the club run, and enjoy posting routes. I'll be the one telling you how fit I used to be while persuading you to stay for another drink.
-

Mark Williams
ROAD CAPTAIN
I have been a member since 2017 when I got bored of riding on my own and decided I liked the look of Brixton's kit. As one of the Road captains, I help organise our Sunday club rides, and to a lesser extent mid-week hills and laps - as well as other assorted one-off events. I'm generally to be found in the pub after rides, or at the back of the group when it gets hilly during them.
-

Oliver Gin
JOINT TREASURER
I joined BCC in 2018. I heard that BCC was friendly and didn't take itself too seriously; I wasn't disappointed! I was a roadie and picked up track after joining the club; the loaner bikes really helped! I became joint Treasurer because I just love a good spreadsheet.
-

Helen Bakie
JOINT TREASURER
After buying a road bike to commute on post lockdown I did some longer rides and eventually the Hebridean Way. Was really keen to do more so thought joining a club was a good idea and had a friend in BCC. Was one of the best decisions I ever made, such a lovely community to be a part of and I've tried so many new things and made new friends.
